To put it simply, Umrah is sort of a mini pilgrimage. Umrah is a blessing to perform, even though it isn't a pillar of Islam. Umrah can be done whenever you want throughout the Islamic calendar, in contrast to Hajj, which can only be performed during the month of Dhul Hijjah.
While performing Umrah, devotees have to perform seven tawaf.

Why Perform Umrah?

Let us explain what Umrah is for those who are unfamiliar with it. The term “Umrah” in Arabic means “visiting a populated place”. Umrah is actually a short form of Hajj. Since Umrah is a significant Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), every Muslim has a strong desire to practice it once in their lives. Apart from being affordable, Umrah can also be performed at any time with the exception of Hajj days. On top of that, unlike Hajj, performing Umrah does not take several days or a month, therefore it is not as time-consuming as participating in Hajj. The intention of Umrah is the same as Hajj. Pilgrims are supposed to use their wealth to serve Allah in order to seek forgiveness for sins they committed earlier in life. It is believed that undertaking the Umrah is equivalent to engaging in Jihad and it helps the pilgrim’s faith in ALLAH.

Abu Hurairah (RA) narrates that Allah’s SWT Messenger (PBUH) said, “(The performance of) Umrah is an expiation for the sins committed (between it and the previous one). And the reward of Hajj Mabrur (the one accepted by Allah) is nothing except Paradise.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari)

Umrah Rules

  • In order to begin Umrah, a person must be in a state of Ihraam, which comes from the Arabic word harama (forbidden). No creature should be hurt – even the hurting of an insect will break the state of Ihraam and nullify Umrah.
  • It is forbidden for pilgrims to trim their nails, wear make-up, use extra cosmetics, or cut their hair when performing the Umrah. If any of them is practiced, Ihraam will be invalid according to Islamic law.
  • Another mandatory Umrah requirement is to make a loud declaration that you intend to perform Umrah. Typically, one does this upon arrival at the Meeqat (entry points to Mecca marking the beginning of observing the Ihraam). The pilgrims then pray and must follow the aforementioned guidelines until they have completed their journey.
